Design

Visually, the revised chassis has fewer accents and angles for a flatter and more professional look than last year’s model, especially along the rear. The two-tone gray and silver color scheme are gone in favor of a more uniform appearance. We prefer the new design as it leans towards minimalism while maintaining many of the distinctive Legion features. Chassis rigidity is excellent on our unit with no audible creaking or terribly weak points. The base and lid exhibit more twisting than the stiffer Blade 16, but not enough to be of any huge concern. The Legion Pro 5 16 is noticeably larger and heavier than many of its peers. The Aero 16, Blade 16, and Zephyrus M16 are all thinner and lighter than the Lenovo by up to 8 mm or 400 grams which is not insignificant. Though it’s certainly nowhere near as bulky as many 17.3-inch gaming laptops, the Legion Pro 5 16 isn’t exactly the most travel-friendly option in its 16-inch size class, either.

Processor 

The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16IRX8 is equipped with the Intel Core i7-14650HX is a high-end CPU based on the new Raptor Lake architecture for large and heavy notebooks. The CPU was introduced at the beginning of 2024 and is similar to the older Core i7-13700HX except for slightly higher CPU clock rates (max 200 MHz). The total of 24 threads are divided into P-cores and E-cores, which we already know from Alder-Lake. The 13700HX offers 8 performance cores (P-cores) with hyperthreading and 8 efficiency cores (E-cores) without hyperthreading. A total of 20 threads are therefore supported. The P-cores clock from 2.2 to 5.2 GHz (single core) or 4.5 GHz (all cores) and the E-cores from 1.6 to 3.7 GHz. The integrated memory controller supports a maximum of DDR5 with 4800 MHz (and not 5600 MHz like the i9 HX models).
